Certain researchers in Denmark have requested thousands of Chinese men and women to help them out in a research program to determine whether or not burning incense over a long period of time can increase the risk of developing a type of respiratory tract cancer. It is popular for the Chinese population to burn incense in holy places.

Dr. Jeppe Friborg and his colleagues at Copenhagen’s Statens Serum Institute worked with researchers in Singapore and the United States for a collaborative study of the effects of breathing the fumes from incense. Between 1993 and 1998, 61,320 Chinese men and women in Singapore were recruited for the study, which followed them through 2005. All study participants were cancer-free at the beginning of the study and all were between the ages of 45 and 74.

The study revealed no specific link between incense and lung cancer, although 821 of the study participants developed lung cancer over the course of the study. Other cancers of the respiratory tract, however, were found to be more numerous in people heavily exposed to incense over a long period of time than in people getting minimal, if any, contact with the fumes. Upper respiratory tract cancers occurred 325 times in study participants, including cancers of the nose and sinuses, mouth, tongue, and larynx.

One form of cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, was found to be more common as exposure increased. Squamous cells line the surfaces of all internal and external organs and the squamous cells lining the respiratory tract are at particular risk from burning incense. The risk increased in both smokers and nonsmokers alike, leaving the research team to conclude there is most likely an element of the incense working independently as a carcinogenic agent.

We all try the best we can to make sure that our teeth are healthy, clean, and white. Sometimes we need a little bit of health to accomplish this. We have listed some of the teeth whiteners toothpaste that can be found.

Arm & Hammer Advance White Toothpaste

With peroxide to whiten and baking soda to clean, this paste releases penetrating bubbles and leaves a minty taste that lasts after you brush. “It brightened my coffee-stained teeth and didn’t make them sensitive,” said one tester.

Rembrandt Advanced Whitening Strips

Testers who had tried other strips were pleasantly surprised by these. “They noticeably whitened my teeth, were easy to use, and weren’t slimy feeling,” said one. They also stayed in place and didn’t slip around on teeth (a common problem with other strips). Some testers saw results in as little as three days.

Aquafresh White Trays

“I got compliments after using these - people noticed that my teeth were whiter,” reported one tester. The flexible trays, which mold to the teeth, are prefilled, so there’s no guesswork about how much whitening gel to use. These trays were also particularly effective on stains between teeth.

With summer here many of us are heading out to the pool or the beach (whichever one is closest) and getting the great summer tan that we have been craving for all winter. For some of us all we will get is a horrible sunburn that (if we’re lucky) will turn into a tan. Because of this we need to be prepared and know exactly what to do when this happens.

Baking Soda: Arm & Hammer baking soda is great for treating a sunburn and even bug bites. All you need to do is dissolve 2 capfuls of it in a tub of warm water. Then you need to soak in the water for 10 - 30 minutes. Ask your doctor for a better time estimate.

When you are done pat dry. When you rub you are irritating your skin. You also want to make sure that a thin layer is still on the burn.

Aftersun Wipes: Aftersun Cloth Wipes (CVS/pharmacy brand) can be used to cool you off and to treat your sunburn. This helps those of you who hate to jump in the shower the day you have been burned. The cloths are cool and contain aloe and vitamin E.

Epsom Salt: You could go more to the traditional sense of healing and take a bath in Epsom salt. Use one cup of Epsom salt and very hot water to start a bath. Soak in water for 15 - 20 minutes.

“Aloe vera is the best remedy for sunburn,” says Dr. Karl Gruber, a surgical pathologist and CEO of Luca Sunscreen. Keep a plant in your home to treat minor burns or irritations—just squeeze the gel-like substance directly from the aloe vera leaves. “It has both anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties,” explains Dr. Gruber. “It’s even used in hospital burn units.”

Many of us have trouble trying to shed the extra pounds. There are so many temptations and addictions that we find it hard to concentrate and to stay on track. Part of this problem is because we do not have motivation to keep us going.

You can’t do something and stick with it unless you have some sort of motivation to keep you going. Not everyone will have the same motivation. It is a personal desire that only you can discover for yourself. You need to ask yourself exactly why you want to lose the weight.

Understand that motivation doesn’t always have to be a reason. It can also be a picture of someone or even of yourself. We have listed a few common motivations that might help to get you started and on the right track to finding your own.

- Take before pictures of yourself. These pictures must show every flaw and will remind you of what you are looking to change.

- Hang up a picture of the man you love or maybe even a guy you like. Sometimes pictures of famous actors do work.

- Hang up a picture of you when you were thin in the past like a wedding picture.

- Hang up a picture of someone who is thin and remind yourself that you want to be that way.

- Buy a small dress and hang up it in plain view. Work into it.

- Train to compete in a marathon or even a half marathon

Keeping our skin healthy should be very important to most of us – but many of us don’t think twice about what we put on our faces. We put on whatever make-up we think looks good on us and we don’t even bother to know exactly what we are trying to clean our faces off with. We need to examine everything and make sure that we are doing what is right.

What many of us don’t know is that we are actually damaging it and making things worse than it was before. The first thing that we need to make sure we do it protect it is to wear sunscreen. The sun’s ray can be harmful to our skin and can cause wrinkles, cancer, and age spots. You can use a natural sunscreen or a moisturizer that contains sunscreen.

Another great thing you can do for your skin is to drink lots of water and eat healthier. The more greasy and fatty foods that you eat the more your skin will break out. Drinking water will help to flush the bad food out of your system and will help to hydrate the skin.

When using soap to wash your face every night make sure that it is a mild soap. If the soap is too harsh it will strip the skin of all of the natural nutrients and moisturizers. Also use lukewarm water instead of really hot or cold water.

There are many foods out there that we believe to be healthy just by knowing their names. If we were to study them and to actually read the back of the box (if they have any) we would discover that they actually contain hidden calories that will cause us to gain weight instead of lose it.

1. Energy bars
Energy bars contain fiber and protein – which are great for making you feel full. However, they also are loaded with calories. That’s fine if you occasionally make one a meal, but most of us eat them as snacks. You might as well enjoy a Snickers, which at 280 calories is in the same range as many energy bars.

Instead: Look for a calorie-controlled bar with about 5 grams of protein or try EatingWell’s Low-Fat Granola Bars.

2. Granola
Granola sounds healthy. But it’s often high in fat, sugar and calories. Don’t be fooled by a seemingly reasonable calorie count; portion sizes are usually a skimpy 1/4 or 1/2 cup. Low-fat versions often just swap sugar for fat and pack as many calories as regular versions.
Lesson learned: Stick with recommended portion sizes and try EatingWell’s Cranberry Oat Granola.

3. Salads
Most of us could use more vegetables—so what’s not to love? Toppings. The pecans and Gorgonzola cheese on Panera Bread’s Fuji Apple Chicken Salad (580 calories, 30 grams fat, 7 grams saturated fat) propel it into double-cheeseburger territory. A McDonald’s double cheeseburger has 440 calories, 23 grams fat, 11 grams saturated fat.

Instead:Before ordering a salad, check its nutrition information or try more than 20 EatingWell recipes for healthy salads and dressings.

4. Smoothies
Smoothies may seem like a tasty way to get your recommended fruit servings—but studies show that beverages are less filling per calorie than solid foods. Added sugars can make some the equivalent of drinking fruit pie filling: the smallest (16-ounce) serving of Jamba Juice’s Orange Dream Machine weighs in at 340 calories, with 69 grams of sugars that don’t all come from juice. You’re better off with fresh-squeezed juices; orange juice has 110 calories per cup.

Instead: Look for smoothies made with whole fruit, low-fat yogurt and no added sugars. Check out EatingWell’s 15 healthy smoothie recipes for ideas.

5. Yogurts
Some premium whole-milk yogurts can give you a hefty dose of saturated fat. Many low-fat versions are every bit as creamy. Enjoy a fruit-flavored low-fat yogurt, but understand that the “fruit” is really jam (i.e., mostly sugar). Or opt for low-fat plain and stir in fresh fruit or other sweetener to taste. My favorite, a tablespoon of Vermont maple syrup (52 calories), provides all the sweetness I need.

Instead: Although they are still good sources of calcium, fat and added sugars make some yogurts closer to dessert than to a healthy snack.

How many people feel like all they do anymore is work? No doubt many of us raised our hands. Whether we are working a 9-5 job, just going to school, or taking care of the children as well as the home we feel that our lives are busy and we barely have time to sit down and take a small break. However, breaks are important and no matter how busy our lives are there is one meal and break that we can’t afford to miss out on – breakfast.

I know that many people believe that breakfast is a meal that can easily be left behind isn’t nearly as important as dinner or lunch – but they are wrong. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you will lose weight quickly by skipping. It is an unsafe way of doing it.

What most people don’t realize is that you need a certain amount of calories per day to keep your body running the way it should. “Eating just about anything in the range of 300 to 400 calories would be better than nothing at all,” says SELF contributor Katherine Brooking, R.D.

Another great thing about eating breakfast is that it will help to jump start your metabolism – which in turn will help you to burn off more fat and it can keep you from snacking a lot during the day. Researchers discovered that those who skip breakfast are often bigger than those who eat it regularly.

So when you wake up tomorrow morning make sure that you eat some yogurt, cereal, or even a slice of leftover pizza. Anything that can make up those calories and jump start your day will work great!

Many of us believe that when we become adults there are many things that we don’t have to worry about. That is until you finally get there and you realize that there are even more things to worry about. Pimples is something that we wish to leave behind during those awkward teenage years – but many of us will still have them well into our 20’s.

In fact, between 15 and 35 percent of women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s suffer from breakouts, according to a report published last year in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. And those numbers are on the rise, says dermatologist Richard Fried, M.D., Ph.D., author of Healing Adult Acne. Doctors attribute this increase to everything from skyrocketing stress levels and hormone fluctuations to today’s carbohydrate-heavy diets.

If you’re tempted to treat your acne with a few old tricks from your teen years, don’t. Adult skin is more sensitive and less resilient than adolescent complexions, and it calls for treatments that also fight the signs of aging. Luckily, many of the best zit zappers out there happen to be top anti-agers, too. So whether your breakouts are an occasional annoyance or a constant struggle, find the updated plan that’s best for you.

GENTLER AT-HOME REGIMENS

- Cleanse no more than twice a day. Since your skin is likely drier than it once was, over-washing can remove the surface oils that keep it supple, says New Orleans dermatologist Mary Lupo, M.D. Look for a cleanser with salicylic acid to break up pore-clogging sebum, plus a skin softener like glycerin. Try Bioré Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser ($6, drugstores) or Garnier Nutritioniste Nutri-Pure Detoxifying Gel Cleanser ($6, drugstores). If your skin is sensitive or extra-dry, alternate with a mild product like Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser ($11, drugstores). And if you only face a pimple or two a month, make that your only cleanser and rely on acne creams for treatment.

- Focus on exfoliating, not degreasing. As we age, skin’s cell turnover slows, and pores can get clogged with dead cells. Slough them away with an at-home peel. (Bonus: Peels soften lines and fade dark spots.) If you break out regularly, use a 10 percent–glycolic acid solution. Try Patricia Wexler M.D. Dermatology Exfoliating Glyco Peel System ($60, Bath & Body Works). For occasional breakouts, opt for lactic acid, the most gentle, moisturizing choice. Find it in Philosophy The Microdelivery Mini Peel Pads ($35, Sephora). And toss the scrubs. “Abrasive grains can rupture acne cysts and increase their life span,” says Jeannette Graf, M.D., a dermatologist in Great Neck, NY.

- Keep on slathering — but with a 2.5 percent cream. BP is the best fast-acting acne healer, says Boston dermatologist Jeffrey Dover, M.D. Higher strengths can irritate dry skin, but studies have shown that the milder version works just as well. Try Skin Effects Acne Spot Treatment ($10, CVS) or Proactiv Repairing Lotion ($22, 800-950-4695). Apply in the morning, just to problem areas. If you suffer from stress or period pimples, use BP on known breakout spots for a week or two prior, as a preventive measure. And since adult acne tends to manifest as deeper, inflamed pimples, Doris Day, M.D., a New York City dermatologist, also recommends applying a 1 percent cortisone cream like Cortaid ($9, drugstores) after BP twice a day to calm redness.

- Use oil-free lotions to smooth skin and reduce the look of lines. Apply one with sunscreen over your BP treatment in the morning — Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion with SPF 15 ($7, drugstores) is a good choice. At night, choose retinol to exfoliate skin and soften lines. Try Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Anti-Blemish Cream ($13, drugstores). Since alpha hydroxy acids and benzoyl peroxide can reduce the efficacy of retinols (and their prescription cousins, the retinoids), make retinol your only P.M. treatment — or wait 10 minutes before layering on top of it.

Many of us have trouble when it comes to keeping up a successful marriage. We want everything to run smoothly so that there are never any problems. Unfortunately this isn’t always possible. In fact many of us have serious problems and we usually always go to the wrong people. Keep in mind that the only people who can truly help are the ones who already are successful at it.

Be your ideal spouse - If someone asked you what you wanted from your partner, you’d quickly rattle off a long list of qualities. But a great relationship starts with you, the Leedses say. “It’s my job to be the kind of partner I want,” Lilo says. “I think, Instead of criticizing, what can I do differently? or What am I doing that is upsetting him?” Once you commit to improving you, you’ll notice a difference in your relationship — and you’ll be motivated to improve even more.

Think before you speak - ”When I’m angry, I say, ‘Don’t talk to me. I’m busy counting to 100,’” Lilo says. “Counting prevents fights from escalating because by the time I’m done, I either forget why I am mad or I realize that what I’m angry about is unimportant.”

Ask for what you need instead of complaining about what is wrong - If something bothers you, it’s better to get it off your chest rather than fume. “But there’s a big difference between ‘We never go out to dinner’ and ‘I’d like to go out for dinner,’” Lilo says. “Asking sets a positive tone, and is more likely to get results.”

Make your marriage a lifelong courtship - ”Just because the honeymoon ends doesn’t mean the romance has to stop,” Lilo says. Gerry adds, “We are still holding hands, making love, and skiing down mountains together. We knew we’d be happy when we met more than five decades ago, but the reality is better than our dreams.”

Mother’s Day is this weekend and it’s time for children and husbands all over the country to start really thinking about the perfect gift to get the woman who does everything for them. We may not have ideas for you on what to get her – but we can tell you what not to get her.

Lotions are a big no-no. I know that they are labeled as the one gift that every woman loves – but sometimes it gets a bit old. Not to mention you are telling her that she needs to beautify herself more. No need to make her feel dumpy. The only type of lotion that you can get her (if you have no other ideas) is the really expensive one that she can only afford once a year.

She does not need yet another kitchen appliance that she needs to find room for. No woman wants something that they have to work hard to use. They want to be pampered. Not reminded to cook the best meals they can every night.

If you are going to get her pajamas please make sure that they make her feel sexy and beautiful. Getting her frumpy or plaid pajamas will make her feel old. Let’s not turn her into a grandma before her time.

Never, ever buy her that $700 vacuum cleaner or carpet shampoo cleaner. No woman wants to be reminded to clean the house on their special day. Plus if you are going to spend that much on her gift you might as well give her that spa day or shopping spree that they have been dreaming about.
